Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
SHREVEPORT, La. - Through seven innings on Tuesday, the two American Association first-half winners engaged in a stirring pitchers' duel, with the Sioux Fall Pheasants and Ben Moore ahead 1-0 against Osvaldo Rodriguez and the Shreveport-Bossier Captains. But Rodriguez departed in the top of the eighth, and the Pheasants scored six runs against the Captains bullpen in the last two frames to win 7-0 in front of 920 fans at Fair Grounds Field.
The lone run allowed by Rodriguez (10-3) came in the fourth, when Tim Hutting tripled to left-center to start the inning. Reggie Abercrombie, who drove in three runs on the night, came up and hit a sacrifice fly to put Sioux Falls (54-25, 22-9 2nd half) in front.
Other than that, Rodriguez walked two, hit one and allowed four other hits along with three strikeouts. But Moore (10-6) was just a bit better. He worked around two singles in the second, and then got past a leadoff double in the fourth and fifth. The fifth inning was much more threatening, as Brian Peterson had a bunt single after Brian Nichols's leadoff two-bagger. But Mike Provencher popped up a bunt back to Moore, who lunged to catch it, and turned and threw to second for a double play. Two pitches later, Peterson was caught stealing second and the inning was over just like that.
Moore did not walk anyone in his seven innings, and retired the last seven he faced. That streak was extended to 10 by reliever Brandon Rapoza, until the Captains (46-33, 17-15) got a baserunner in the ninth on Bryan Sabatella's leadoff double. But Ryan Grant stranded him as well, as the Pheasants became the second team to shut the Captains out this year, after Pensacola had previously done it twice.
Mark Haynes was charged with three earned runs in a five-run eighth inning for Sioux Falls, who were aided by two errors and a passed ball, along with three walks and three hits. The Pheasants capped the scoring with an RBI single by Abercrombie off Marcus Salmon in the ninth.
Notes: The Captains were 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position, with Peterson's bunt single that did not advance the runner the only hit. No Captains player made it to third in the game. Both Rodriguez and Peterson picked off a Pheasants baserunners in the game. The Captains failed to draw a walk for the third time in the first eight games of this homestand.
