Phantoms to Hold Selection Camp June 6-10
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Youngstown Phantoms announced today that they will hold their 2013 Selection Camp June 6-10 in Youngstown. The five-day long camp will determine the Phantoms hockey team for the 2013-2014 United States Hockey League season.
The Phantoms Selection camp is an invitation-only camp and selected players will receive an initiation via email or direct mail following the USHL Entry Draft on May 7. Those who wish for the opportunity to be invited may email Phantoms' assistant general manager and director of player personnel Jason Koehler ( firstname.lastname@example.org ) regarding their interest and their playing background for the Phantoms' Selection Camp.
Due to USHL league policy, no camp invitations can be sent out until the conclusion of the Entry Draft May 7. The Phantoms will be sending out invites and registration forms via email and direct mail. Registration forms must be returned by Thursday, May 30 via fax to the Phantoms Front Office (330.745.5175) or email . Confirmation of admission to camp will be emailed or called in within 48 hours based on contact information provided on the completed forms.
Thursday and Friday, June 6-7, will feature the Goaltender Camp in which junior and college hockey shooters will be on hand to shoot on the goaltending invitees. Each goaltender in attendance gets three on-ice sessions over the two days and is evaluated through a variety of drills. This camp gives selected goaltenders a chance to earn a coveted spot in the Phantoms Final Camp rosters immediately following the Goaltender Camp. All goaltenders expecting to play for the Phantoms must go through this portion of camp. This camp, along with the Final Camp evaluation, allows the Phantoms hockey staff to make the best decisions possible on the most important position in the game.
The Final Camp will run Saturday and Sunday, June 8-9. Here, teams of non-Phantom veteran junior players, USHL draft picks, and specially invited free agent players play for an undetermined number of spots for the next portion of the Final Camp, which takes place Sunday evening and Monday morning. Players from all levels and ages will be invited here.
Sunday evening and Monday morning, June 9-10, will feature just two teams of the top players from the Goaltender Camp and first days of the Final Camp, as well as the addition of veteran Phantoms USHL players. These players will participate in games and individual interviews with the Phantoms staff before final roster decisions are made on Monday afternoon.
On Monday, June 10 the Phantoms hockey staff will select the 2013-2014 Youngstown Phantoms team that will compete in the USHL next season. These players will meet with the staff, go over their off-season expectations and team rules. In addition, they will be tested for off-ice conditioning, given their off-season workout programs and get acquainted with their new teammates and hockey staff as the team looks forward to a great season, which will begin when the players report to Youngstown in late August.
This camp is also a great opportunity for players who may not think they are quite ready for the USHL level yet, but want to experience an extremely competitive camp, become familiar with one of the top developmental programs in the country, meet the Phantoms staff and show their potential for following season(s).
The Phantoms will contact and invite all NHL and NCAA Division I teams, as well as other junior programs in the NAHL, EJHL, AJHL, and NA3HL to attend and scout players who participate in the Phantoms Selection Camp for maximum hockey exposure for our participants.
The Phantoms' equipment manager Bill Sutton will be available during the Camp for equipment needs and skate sharpening. Additionally, the Phantoms' athletic trainer Jim Schroeder will be in attendance for medical needs during Camp.
