Adirondack Phantoms News Release
Syracuse. NY - The Adirondack Phantoms concluded the preseason Sunday night with an exciting contest at Syracuse in a 5-4 setback to the Crunch.
Guilio Scandella, Tye McGinn, Cullen Eddy and Luke Pither lit the lamp for the Phantoms. Pither's tied it midway through the 3rd period at 4-4. After Syracuse re-took the lead the Phantoms appeared to have the momentum for the closing minutes but couldn't find the equalizer.
Scandella received #3 Star of the Game honors adding a very nice assist on Pither's 3rd period tally. Scandella is a non-roster invitee who impressed during camp following a season in the Swedish Elite League last year. Pither's laser from the slot was his second goal of the preseason. He finished 3rd in the OHL in scoring last season with 94 points trailing only the top two picks in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft Taylor Hall and Tyler Seguin.
Eddy's power play goal in the 2nd period was a laser of its own as he showcased a big slapshot from the right point. The Mercyhurst College product joined the Cincinnati Cyclones as a pro late last season and was a key in their Kelly Cup Championship playoff run.
Garrett Klotz dropped the gloves with familiar for Jon Mirasty in a quick bout in the 2nd period. Mirasty is the only holdover on a Syracuse Crunch team that otherwise is completely changed after switching affiliations from Columbus to Anaheim. Former Phantoms and Flyer Danny Syvret also played for the Syracuse Crunch.
Brian Stewart started for the Phantoms and was replaced midway through the 2nd period by Nic Riopel.
The game also featured brothers Chase and Brett Watson playing together as teammates for the first time in their lives. The sons and nephews of former Philadelphia Flyers Jim and Joe Watson were on the same line and played some shifts together. The younger Brett Watson just completed his career at UMass-Amherst and is slated to play for the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL. The older Chase Watson has played professionally for three season and is expected to play for the Arizona Sundogs of the Central Hockey League.
Head Coach Greg Gilbert said that the Flyers organization is expected to make several moves on Monday and Tuesday as both Philadelphia and Adirondack finalize their season opening rosters. The Flyers begin play Thursday night at Pittsburgh and the Phantoms play their first game of the year Friday night at the Binghamton Senators.
The Flyers wrapped up their eight game preseason schedule earlier in the day at Buffalo featuring several Phantoms possibles in the game including rookie prospect Mike Testwuide who scored a goal.
The Phantoms open the regular season on the road next Friday, October 8th at the Binghamton Senators and then will be the visitors for Albany's home opener on Saturday, October 9th.
Adirondack's first home games of the 2010-11 regular season, presented by Bud Light, will be Friday, October 15th and Saturday, October 16th. The Opening Night game is presented by Potvin & Potvin Family Dentistry and Nemer Ford and the first 5000 fans will receive Phantoms magnet schedules courtesy of Potvin & Potvin Family Dentistry.
