Adirondack Phantoms News Release
(PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 29, 2002) - The Philadelphia Phantoms recorded their second straight preseason game shutout today as goaltender Antero Niittymaki made 25 saves in a 3-0 victory over the Norfolk Admirals at the Polonia Bank Flyers Skate Zone.
Mike Siklenka, Jack Baker and Ian Forbes each scored a goal and defenseman Brad Tiley contributed two assists for Philadelphia, which was coming off Thursday's 4-0 triumph over the Albany River Rats. The Phantoms are now 2-1 in preseason play, with one game remaining next Sunday at Bridgeport.
Niittymaki, a 1998 sixth-round draft pick by the Flyers from Finland, faced just three shots in the opening period. Meanwhile, Siklenka staked him to a 1-0 lead 4:16 into the game during a 5-on-3 power-play situation. Tiley set up the play with a pass to Mark Greig, who fired a hard slap shot on net. Admirals goaltender Ron Vogel stopped the shot, but Siklenka was there to poke in the rebound.
Baker doubled the Philadelphia lead 2:01 into the second stanza with a high line drive from between the circles that sailed over Vogel's shoulder. Tiley and Jeff Smith were credited with assists.
Forbes made it 3-0 with 85 seconds to play in the middle period. Following a face-off in the Admirals zone, Eric Betournay fed Forbes for a long slap shot that made its way through traffic and past back-up netminder Sebastien LaPlante, who came on with 9:22 left in the period.
Norfolk got off 17 shots in the final period, but Niittymaki was equal to the task each time.
The Phantoms open the 2002-03 season on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 7:05 p.m., when they host the Rochester Americans at the First Union Spectrum.
