MANITOBA 5, ST. JOHN'S 2

Herbert Vasiljevs scored twice and Brandon Reid added three assists as Manitoba (2-0-0) finished off a two-game weekend sweep of St. John's (0-3-0) with a 5-2 win in Thunder Bay, Ont., on Saturday. Unsigned rookie Jason King scored his fourth goal in two nights for the Moose, who also got goals from Denis Martynyuk and Nathan Smith. Warren Morgan and Riley Cote had the goals for the Maple Leafs. Alex Auld, who grew up in Thunder Bay, made 32 saves for the win. BINGHAMTON 2, WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON 2 (OT)

Mike Valley made 50 saves and Matt Murley scored with 7:57 left in regulation as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (1-0-1) earned a 2-2 tie with Binghamton (0-1-1) on Saturday. The Senators outshot the Penguins by a 52-15 margin for the game, including 13-4 in the first period, 16-5 in the second, 20-5 in the third and 3-1 in overtime. Jeff Szwez and Brian McGrattan scored for Binghamton, while Zenon Konopka tallied the other Penguins goal. LOWELL 2, HARTFORD 2 (OT)

Sean Curry's shorthanded goal with 8:15 to play gave Lowell (1-0-1) a 2-2 tie with Hartford (0-1-1) in Stoneham, Mass., on Saturday night. Curry, a 2001 draft pick of the Carolina Hurricanes, played last season for Medicine Hat in the WHL. Ken Gernander and Benoit Dusablon scored for the Wolf Pack. PORTLAND 2, WORCESTER 1

Trent Whitfield and Nick Lent scored second-period goals and Rastislav Stana made 34 saves to lead Portland (2-0-0) to a 2-1 win over Worcester (0-2-0) at the Portland Ice Arena on Saturday. Lent's goal, on a 5-on-3 power play, came with 1:21 left in the middle frame and snapped a 1-1 tie. It was the second goal in as many nights for the former Providence College Friar. Phil Osaer finished with 39 saves for the IceCats. MILWAUKEE 6, CHICAGO 3

Vern Fiddler scored two goals and Bryan Lundbohm had a goal and two assists as the Milwaukee Admirals (1-0-0) beat the Chicago Wolves (0-1-0), 6-3, in AHL preseason play Saturday night at the Wilson Park Ice Arena in Milwaukee. The defending Calder Cup champion Wolves led 2-1 after one period, but the Admirals scored three straight second-period goals to take the lead for good. Jan Lasak, a 2002 Olympian with Slovakia, stopped 13 of 15 shots for Milwaukee. The teams meet again on Wednesday in Rolling Meadows, Ill.
