Youngstown Phantoms News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Youngstown Phantoms have acquired a third-round pick in the upcoming USHL Phase I Draft, a sixth-round pick in the USHL Phase II Draft and future considerations from the Muskegon Lumberjacks in exchange for forward Blake Christensen and their fourth-round Phase I selection, head coach and general manager Anthony Noreen announced today.
"It was simply a situation where we decided to go into a different direction with our team and our lineup," Noreen said. "We think Blake's going to be in a good spot in Muskegon. They're a team that felt they could utilize him in the type of role that he wanted and we wish Blake the best."
A native of Tampa, Fla., Christensen registered two goals, 20 penalty minutes and a minus-4 rating in 12 games with the Phantoms this season. The 18-year-old winger was Youngstown's first pick in the 2013 USHL Phase II Draft after splitting last season between the U.S. National Under-18 Team and Detroit Little Caesars U-18 AAA Team.
The draft pool for Phase I of the 2014 USHL draft, formerly referred to as the "USHL Futures Draft", is made top players in the 1998 birth class. Though players chosen are traditionally not ready to play in the USHL the following season, Youngstown's 2013 first-round selection, defenseman Steven Ruggiero, has already appeared in five games with the Phantoms this season, registering an assist.
The Phase II portion of the draft, previously known as the "USHL Entry Draft", consists of players from multiple birth years as USHL teams look to fill their protected lists with players who will compete for roster spots for the 2013-14 season.
"The pieces that we have coming back bode extremely well for our future," Noreen said. "The draft is really where you build your team and to get a sixth-round pick in the [Phase I] draft and a third-round pick in the [Phase II] draft are huge additions."
The Phantoms face off against the Lumberjacks in a two-game home-and-home series starting this Friday at the Covelli Centre. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m. EST. The Phantoms will travel up to Muskegon, Mich., the following night to take on the Lumberjacks on their home ice at L.C. Walker Arena. Puck drop Saturday is set for 7:15 p.m. EST and both games will be broadcast on Sports Radio 1240 and webcast on FASTHockey.com.
