
Petree Pitches Six Shutout Innings in 4-1 Chiefs Win

PEORIA, IL- Nick Petree tossed six shutout innings with eight strikeouts and Kenny Peoples-Walls had a pair of RBI singles as the Peoria Chiefs defeated the Cedar Rapids Kernels 4-1 on Tuesday night. The Chiefs have taken each of the first two games of the four game series and move to 10-7 on the season.
The Chiefs scored a run in the first inning for the second straight game. Juan Herrera laced a one-out double to left-center, got to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Peoples-Walls infield single.
Peoria doubled the lead in the third, and again it was Peoples-Walls with the RBI single. CJ McElroy Jr. led off with an infield hit, stole second, and scored when Peoples-Walls ripped a single past the diving third baseman.
The Chiefs added single runs in the sixth and seventh. Mason Katz drew a four-pitch leadoff walk in the sixth and got to second on another Kernels wild pitch. Jake Stone advanced Katz to third with a ground out and Katz scored on an error. In the seventh, McElroy and Herrera hit back-to-back singles to open the inning, with McElroy advancing to third. Carson Kelly hit a sac fly to right scoring McElroy, giving the Chiefs a 4-0 lead.
Cedar Rapids avoided the shutout with a run with two outs in the ninth. Chad Christensen led off with a single, got to second on a wild pitch and scored on Zach Larson's single.
Petree (2-0) allowed just three hits in his six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts and two walks to earn the win. Chase Brookshire tossed a scoreless seventh inning for his first hold, allowing a hit but getting a double play ball. Zach Loraine went the final two innings, giving up a run on two hits with three strikeouts.
