Lugnuts ride Gabryszwski to 6-1 victory
April 22, 2014 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts (6-11) combined the great pitching of Jeremy Gabryszwski with a reawakened offense to defeat the Lake County Captains (5-13), 6-1 on Tuesday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.
The 21-year-old Gabryszwski (W, 1-2) pitched a career-high eight innings and tied a career best with six strikeouts - three times victimizing 2013 fifth overall pick Clint Frazier - while allowing just one run on six hits and not issuing a walk.
Lansing second baseman Jason Leblebijian knocked an RBI double to bring in Santiago Nessy to give the Lugnuts an early 1-0 lead in the third on Lake County starting pitcher Caleb Hamrick (Loss, 1-2). Later in the inning, Matt Dean ripped a double to left-center to plate two more runs.
The Lugnuts kept the offense rolling in the fourth. Center fielder D.J. Davis cleared the bases with a three-run double tucked inside the left field line to put Lansing ahead 6-0.
Gabryszwski had his potential shutout broken in the eighth inning when Claudio Bautista led off with a triple and was brought home on a single by Brian Ruiz.
Lugs reliever Jimmy Cordero opened the ninth with two strikeouts before departing due to injury after walking Richard Stock. Alonzo Gonzalez walked Paul Hendrix before striking out Bautista to end the game.
The Lugnuts and Captains continue the four-game series on a Hump Day Wednesday night, featuring Humphrey the Camel. Adonys Cardona (0-2, 5.63) starts for Lansing against Adam Plutko (0-0, 2.84) for Lake County, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
