Petes Education Fund Awards Scholarship to Three Local Hockey Players

(Peterborough, ON) - The Petes Education Fund announced today that Jacob Downey, Olivia Gosselin, and Scott Broersma are the 2021 recipients of the annual Petes Education Fund Minor Hockey Scholarships.

Downey is heading to Queen's University this fall, with the intention of pursuing a program related to sports medicine. The Lindsay, Ont. native is currently attending I.E. Weldon Secondary School, and suited up for the U18 PMHC AAA Petes throughout the 2020-21 season

"I think it's an honour to be picked out of all the kids in Peterborough for this scholarship," said Downey. "It's really going to help me move forward in my schooling career."

Gosselin is graduating from Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School at the conclusion of this school year and will be pursuing her dreams of becoming a paramedic at St. Lawrence College. As a member of the U18 AA Peterborough IceKats, Gosselin was surprised to learn her coach Mike Foote nominated her.

"I think it's really important, I didn't know that my coach nominated me so I'm just really thankful that I got it, because it's going to help me out in school," said Gosselin. "I think it's special because I grew up playing hockey for 10 years and this is a good way to end it and it will help me."

Although Broersma will be graduating from Adam Scott Collegiate and Vocational Institute, he plans to spend his career in the classroom, studying primary education at Bishop's University in Lennoxville, Que., in the fall.

"This was not something I expected to win," said Broersma. "It was a surprise for me, but I am honoured."

The Petes Education Fund gives out nine annual $500 scholarships, including one to a player from each of the U18 PMHC AAA Petes, U18 PHA Petes AA/A/AE, and U18 AA IceKats, as well as to one student at each of the six City high schools: Adam Scott, Crestwood, Holy Cross, Kenner, St. Peter, and TAS. The high school scholarships are not necessarily for an athlete, but for any student who has improved through their effort and hard work as selected by the school.
