OTTAWA - Despite badly outshooting the eastern conference's top team, a late third period goal foiled the efforts of the Ottawa 67's.

They fell 3-1 to the first-place Peterborough Petes, after outshooting the team 27-16 in a game spent mostly in the attacking zone.

Jeff Brown, the head coach and general manager of the 67's, was frustrated that the team would get zero points after "buying in" and playing one of their best games of the season.

"We deserved a better outcome," he said. "Their goalie played well. There were times that we could have scored and didn't - we played 60 really good minutes."

The 67's controlled the pace of the game early on thanks to an interference minor to Matyas Svoboda. They had a 7-1 lead in the shot total eight minutes into the game.

However, it was Cole Fraser who opened the game's scoring, on an unassisted marker that beat Olivier Lafreniere on the glove side.

But their one goal lead would not last long, with Jared Steege knotting the game at one right before the first period buzzer. He took a pass from Chris Martenet and sent a spinning shot through the five hole of Scott Smith at 19:41.

After a scoreless second period, the Petes would get some sustained power play time of their own, and got the go-ahead goal off the stick of Steven Lorenz. He fired a low shot from the right point, and put the Petes ahead 2-1 at 14:50 of the third.

Peterborough put the game on ice five minutes later, with an empty net goal in the final minute.

Ottawa returns to action Saturday, continuing their current homestand in the friendly confines of The Arena at TD Place. They host the Owen Sound Attack at 2 p.m.
