Windsor Spitfires News Release
(Peterborough, ON) "" Five goals in a span of 15 minutes in the first period proved enough, as the Petes doubled the Windsor Spitfires, 6-3, in front of 3,135 at the Peterborough Memorial Centre Saturday.
Slater Doggett scored twice in a losing cause for Windsor (21-28-1-1), which lost for the third time in a stretch of three days, remaining five points behind Saginaw for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference, by virtue of the Spirit's 5-2 loss to the Mississauga Steelheads.
Eric Cornel (13) and Josh McDonald (24) got the offense going early, staking Peterborough (20-24-1-4) to a 2-0 lead with goals at 3:05 and 3:35.
Johnathon Ang added a pair during a 2:15 span, in the back half of the opening period, chasing starter Brendan Johnston (10 saves) from the Windsor goal. Steven Lorentz put the game out of reach with the home side's fifth goal, on the power play, at 18:57.
Trevor Murphy's team-leading 18th of the season got the Spitfires on the board just past the midway point of the second period and Slater Doggett's first of two on the night made it 5-2 just 91 seconds later, pulling Windsor within three goals after 40 minutes.
Doggett's 17th of the season followed early in the second, but that's as close as the visitors would get. Hunter Garlent rounded out the scoring, finishing off a three-way passing play by hitting an empty net, with just 44 seconds to play.
Fotinos made 27 saves in relief of Johnston, while Tecumseh native Matt Mancina (36 saves) earned his 13th win of the season.
The Spits host the Kitchener Rangers this coming Thursday, February 12th, at 7:05.
