ZEBULON, NC - Dustin Peterson hit a grand slam in the second, Johan Camargo hit a two run single in the fourth and Yean Carlos Gil earned his first win since early June as the Mudcats defeated the Red Sox 13-6 at Five County Stadium on Wednesday night.

Peterson was 3-for-5 with three runs, four RBI, a grand slam and a walk in the home victory. His grand slam in the second answered a one run top of the second by the Red Sox (55-66, 17-34) and put the Mudcats (63-58, 29-23) up 7-1. Peterson was also 2-for-4 with a home run in game one on Tuesday night and has now homered in two straight games.

Gil (W, 2-9, 6.52) allowed five runs and nine hits while pitching into the sixth in his first start with the Mudcats since 6/19. He returned to Carolina from Class A Rome on 8/15 and managed to pick up his second win of the season on Wednesday night. He allowed one run over the first four innings and gave up two in the fifth and sixth innings before leaving the game.

Ty Buttrey (L, 7-8, 4.05) started for Salem and allowed two runs in the first before allowing Peterson's grand slam in the second. He pitched into the fourth, but left with two men on base in the inning. Both runners were allowed in by reliever Brandon Show who then went to keep the Mudcats quiet before the four run seventh.

Buttrey allowed nine runs and nine runs over three plus innings on Wednesday night. Show worked three and 1/3 innings and gave up four runs on six hits.

Camargo was 2-for-5 with a run and two runs batted in. Reed Harper was 3-for-5 with two runs and both Connor Lien and Keith Curcio scored twice while going 1-for-4 and 1-for-5 respectively. Curcio's run in the first came with two outs in the inning and on a double steal. Lien singled to score a run in the second and then scored on Peterson's grand slam.

Carolina led 9-1 after the fourth, but the Red Sox came back with two in the fifth (on a Cole Sturgeon two-run home run) and two more in the sixth while cutting the lead down to 9-5. Carolina's four run seventh lifted the lead to 13-5 and the Mudcats then managed to put the game away.

Jose Briceno had a two run bases loaded single to right in the seventh and was 1-for-2 in the game. He entered in the fifth in place of designated hitter Jacob Schrader who had left after walking and scoring a run in the fourth. Schrader was 1-for-2 with a run scored.

Reliever Andrew Waszak took over for Gil in the sixth and left two inherited runners on base. He worked through an inning and 1/3 scoreless overall and finished with one and one strikeout.

Richie Tate followed Waszak in the eighth and allowed a run and a hit while also striking out one. Jorge Zavala finished the game with a scoreless ninth and struck out two.

The victory gave the Mudcats 2-0 lead and series victory against the Red Sox. The finale is scheduled for Thursday night with the first pitch set for 7:00 p.m. at Five County Stadium.
