STOCKTON, Calif. - After suffering bizarre losses and muddling through a six-game losing streak, the Stockton Ports were in need of a big performance and they got one from Tanner Peters (3-3). Peters retired the first 15 batters he faced and spun a career-high eight innings as he helped the Ports to a 2-1 win over the Bakersfield Blaze at Banner Island Ballpark.

Blaze starter Carlos Contreras allowed just one hit over the first three innings. In the fourth, Dusty Robinson worked a one out walk. Two batters later, Ryan Delgado singled to put runners at the corners. B.A. Vollmuth came up next and hit a ground ball to third. Juan Silverio fielded the ball and threw high to first base, an error that allowed Robinson to score and give Stockton a 1-0 lead.

Contreras received a no-decision, going six innings and allowing an unearned run on two hits while striking out a season-high nine.

Peters gave up a leadoff single to Juan Duran in the sixth that broke up the string of 15 in a row set down. Ryan Wright came up next and flew out to left-center as center fielder Bobby Crocker made a diving catch or the first out. Peters would induce a double-play off the bat of Juan Perez to get out of the inning.

Silverio led off the seventh inning with a double. Peters, though, struck out Marquez Smith and got Steve Selsky and Kyle Waldrop to fly out to center on another spectacular catch made by Crocker, this time at the right-center field fence.

Peters came on to pitch the bottom of the eighth and, after getting the first batter to ground out, gave up a home run to Duran to straight away center that tied the contest at 1-1. Peters retired the next two batters to end the frame and his outing.

Mike Dennhardt (1-3) took over for Contreras in the seventh and set the side down in order. After the Blaze tied the game in the top of the eighth, Myrio Richard led off the bottom of the eighth with a home run to left to give Stockton a 2-1 lead. Dennhardt retired the next three batters in succession to end the inning.

Brett Hunter (SV, 1) was summoned to pitch the ninth for the Ports. After retiring the first two batters, Hunter gave up a double to Smith and walked Selsky to put two aboard. Hunter, however, struck out Waldrop to end the ballgame and notch his first save of the season.

Peters earned the win, going eight innings and allowing one run on four hits while striking out a career-high 10. Dennhardt took the loss for the Blaze despite retiring six of the seven batters he faced.

The Ports and Blaze play the second game of their four-game set on Thursday in a matinee affair. Sergio Perez (0-1, 20.25 ERA) will make his third start for Stockton, opposed by Bakersfield right-hander Jacob Johnson (3-1, 6.03 ERA). First pitch is set for 11:05 a.m. PDT.
