Modesto Nuts News Release
BAKERSFIELD, CA (May 13th, 2013) -- Modesto fell behind 4-0 after the first two innings, and went on to lose 5-2 against the Blaze on Monday night at Sam Lynn Ballpark.
With the defeat, the Nuts dropped 3-of-4 in the series to Bakersfield and fell to 16-22 on the season.
Nuts starter Ben Alsup struggled in the early goings, allowing five earned runs in the first three innings, and that would be enough for the Blaze who limited the Nuts to only two runs on six hits in the contest.
Bakersfield jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first as Juan Perez doubled to start the game, and Kyle Waldrop brought him home on a bloop RBI single. A few pitches later, Juan Silverio belted a 2-run homer to make it a big opening inning. Blaze catcher Yovan Gonzalez added an RBI single in the second, and Waldrop hit a solo homer to lead off to third to make it 5-2 after three innings of play.
Alsup (3-3), who would last five innings, was charged for five earned runs on nine hits in the loss.
Blaze starter James Allen (2-4) turned in his best outing of the year, allowing only a 2-run double to Ryan Casteel in 6 2/3 innings. He gave up only five hits and struck out five.
Both teams went scoreless after the third, with the Nuts bullpen working three scoreless innings in relief of Alsup. Blaze closer El'Hajj Muhammad ran into trouble in the ninth putting two in scoring position, but got through the inning unscathed to nail down his second save in as many tries.
The Nuts head in to an off day tomorrow, before returning to John Thurman Field on Wednesday night to host the Lake Elsinore Storm in the first game of a four-game series. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. RHP Dan Winkler (4-1, 2.20) will start for the Nuts. Lake Elsinore has yet to announce a starter.
Wednesday's game marks the start of a seven game homestand at John Thurman Field. Tickets are available and can be purchased by calling (209) 572-HITS, or online at ModestoNuts.com.
