
Perfect Rawhide Bullpen Sends Nuts to 5-3 Loss

MODESTO, CA. - After erasing an early lead, the Modesto Nuts' offense was shut down in a 5-3 loss to the Visalia Rawhide on Friday night at John Thurman Field.
Initially, the Rawhide (49-26; 5-4) the jumped out to a two-run lead in the first inning against Nuts (33-46; 3-6) starter Ljay Newsome (L, 5-5). Newsome worked four innings allowing four runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.
The Nuts came back to tie the game in the top of the second. Both Matt Sanders and Eugene Helder recorded RBI singles. In the third, the Nuts took their only lead against Rawhide starter Justin Vernia (W, 3-0). Connor Kopach started the third inning with a double. Joe Rizzo brought him home with a RBI double to extend his hitting streak to ten games.
After that double, the Nuts' offense recorded just one more hit the rest of the night. Vernia worked six innings allowing just the three runs with five strikeouts and one walk. Vernia retired the final eight he faced before the bullpen sent nine down in order. Overall, Rawhide pitching retired 17 consecutive hitters to end the game. Breckin Williams (S, 6/8) recorded the final three outs of the night.
The Rawhide took the lead for good in the fourth inning. Joe Gillette doubled home the tying run. He later scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly. The Rawhide added one more sac fly in the fifth, but overall the Nuts bullpen worked five innings allowing just one hit.
