Pels Sign Two-Time Champion Pitcher

The Pelicans announced today that they have received right-handed pitcher Cory Walters in a trade from the Fort Worth Cats for the 2008 season. Walters has been one of the Pelicans toughest opposing pitchers, and on opening day, May 8, he will be in the home dugout rather than the visitors.

Walters has dominated the American Association hitters the past two seasons combining to go 24-9 with a 3.13 ERA, 7 complete games, 4 shutouts, 253.1 innings pitched, 214 strikeouts, and only 49 walks. Against the Pelicans, the right-hander was 6-1 in nine starts while striking out 62 Pensacola hitters.

"Although he's not a veteran in league status, he has the experience and has proven he can pitch and win," said Pelicans Manager Mac Seibert.

Last season in the American Association play-offs, Walters was 2-0 in two appearances. In two games, he logged 16 innings, gave up only four runs on 10 hits, and struck out 17.

Pels Training Academy Announces Summer Camps

The Pelicans Training Academy has four schedule summer camps:

June 9-11

June 23-25

July 7-9

July 21-23

The all-day camps will focus on baseball instruction and team sports. Lunch and a camp t-shirt is provided.
