St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints have reached the playoffs in five consecutive seasons and are back-to-back North Division Champions. Part of the reason they have been so successful is the talent in their own backyard. On Thursday, April 24 the Saints will try to find that hidden gem when they hold their annual open tryout.

The tryout begins at 9:00 a.m. at Midway Stadium with registration starting at 8:00 a.m. Players are asked to come dressed in baseball attire and to bring their own glove and wood bat. There is no charge for the tryout.

Infielders will have a chance to field ground balls and show off their throwing arms in different defensive drills. Outfielders will get the opportunity to show their range on grounders and fly balls and to show off their arms as well. All position players will have the opportunity to take cuts.

All pitchers will throw a side bullpen session while catchers will get behind the dish and show off their skills.

"We have signed players out of this tryout in previous years," said Saints manager George Tsamis. "We still have a few holes to fill so we are looking for the right fit for our ballclub."

Two of the Saints biggest signings out of a tryout camp in recent years were left-handed pitcher Brian Whinnery and right-handed pitcher Charlie Ruud. Whinnery is a graduate of the University of St. Thomas and Cretin-Durham Hall High School. He was an All-Star for the Saints last season. Ruud is a graduate of St. Olaf College and is second on the Saints all-time strikeouts list.

The Saints season opens on May 8 against the Grand Prairie AirHogs at 7:05 p.m. at Midway Stadium. For tickets to all home games, including the American Association All-Star Game, July 22 at Midway Stadium, contact the Saints Box Office at 651-644-6659 or visit saintsbaseball.com.
