Pels Add Veteran Triple-A Pitcher

The Pensacola Pelicans announced today that they have signed right-handed pitcher Bubba Nelson to contract for the 2009 season. The 6' 2" 200-pound hurler was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2000 Major League Baseball draft by the Atlanta Braves.

Born in Clinton, MD, Nelson signed with the Atlanta Braves out of high school. At only 18 years of age, he made an immediate impact for the Gulf Coast Braves, posting a winning record in six starts with a complete game while striking out 54 batters in 44.2 innings pitched.

Nelson spent last year with the Toronto Blue Jays organization, throwing 17.2 innings and striking out 13 with the triple-A affiliate in Syracuse, NY.

In 2007, Bubba Nelson pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies organization. In 24 games he posted a career-low ERA of 1.67 for the double-A Reading squad before advancing to the triple-A Ottawa Lynx. In Ottawa, Nelson tossed 69.1 innings, picking up three wins and striking out 40.

The year 2006 saw Nelson in double-A ball for the Padres with an ERA of 3.86 in 51 games.

In 2004 and 2005 Nelson spent time with the Cincinnati Reds affiliates where he pitched 128 innings. Starting 12 games for the triple-A team in 2004, Nelson notched 45 strikeouts.

Bubba Nelson's best year for the Atlanta Braves organization was 2003. He posted an ERA of 1.88 in 11 games for the triple-A Richmond Braves after being called up from the double-A Greenville team.

Nelson's nine year minor-league career totals include 49 wins, 58 losses, a 3.81 ERA, 261 games (114 starts), 864 innings pitched, and 734 strikeouts.

With the addition of Nelson, the Pelicans roster now sits at 24 with 10 pitchers, one catcher, seven outfielders, and six infielders. The Pelicans report to Spring Training on May 2nd.
