Pelicans Win Southern Divisional Series With 11-5 Game Four Victory

Winston-Salem, N.C. - Sparked by a six run seventh inning, the Pelicans defeated the Winston-Salem Warthogs 11-5 to win the Southern Divisional series three games to one. The Pelicans will square off with the Potomac Nationals starting on Monday at BB&T Coastal Field in the best-of-five Mills Cup Championship series.

For the first time in the series, the Pelicans got off to an early lead. In the first, Travis Jones hit a one out double down the left field line. Eric Campbell hit a flare to right field to move Jones to third. Then, Ernesto Mejia hit a long liner to center field that allowed Jones to tag from third to give the Birds a 1-0 lead.

The Warthogs responded with three runs in the bottom of the second. Estee Harris started the frame with a double off the left field wall. After advancing to third on a ground out, he scored on a lined single by Greg Paiml to right field to tie the game at 1-1. The next batter, Dale Mollenhauer hit a double off the wall in right field to score Brett Bonvechio from second. Francisco Hernandez followed with sacrifice fly to right field that scored Paiml to give the 'Hogs a 3-1 edge.

In the fifth, the Birds erased one run off the lead. Gorkys Hernandez hit a one out triple through the right-center field alley. Jones followed with a fly ball to left field that allowed Hernandez to tag and score.

The Pelicans took their second lead of the afternoon in the seventh inning. Phillip Britton and Gorkys Hernandez recorded back-to-back singles. Jones then sacrificed them to second and third. The Warthogs followed with an intentional walk to Eric Campbell. After passing on Campbell, Mejia made the Warthogs pay with a two run single down the left field line to give the Birds a 4-3 lead. Tyler Flowers followed with an RBI double to score Campbell. The scoring continued as Jason Heyward scorched a Wander Perez pitch into right field to score Mejia. Concepcion Rodriguez capped the six-run inning with a double into left-center field to give the Birds a commanding 8-3 advantage. The Warthogs used four pitchers in the frame (Michael Dubee, Matt Davis, Wander Perez and Nathan Jones).

Pelicans starter Ryne Reynoso tossed seven solid innings to earn the game four win. He scattered seven hits and allowed only three runs.

The Pelicans tacked on three runs in the eighth to build an 11-3 lead. Travis Jones, Tyler Flowers and Brandon Hicks each recorded RBI singles.

The Warthogs managed to plate two runs in the eighth but fell short in the ninth as Cory Gearrin sealed the Pelicans spot in the championship series.
