El Paso Diablos News Release

The Pensacola Pelicans used Cesar Aranguren's eighth inning double to sneak past the El Paso Diablos 5-4 on Thursday night from Cohen Stadium.

The Pensacola Pelicans got things going early on against Robbie Wachman. Nathan Warrick led off the contest with a double down the left field line. Chaz Lytle moved him over with a ground out and J.D Reininger scored Warrick on a single for the 1-0 lead.

The Diablos answered the Pelicans with a two run bottom of the first. Jorge Alvarez belted in Albenis Machado with an RBI single up the middle. The very next at bat Juan Camacho smashed a double off the wall giving El Paso a 2-0 lead. Walter Olmstead reached base on a throwing error from the shortstop Bo Brown putting runners on the corners. Logan Wood then bounced a ball up the middle and the shortstop Brown stepped on second for one and threw wildly to first base which would have scored Juan Camacho. However, the second base umpire ruled that Walter Olmstead interfered with the shortstop and the run was nullified and the inning ended.

The Pelicans responded in the top of the second. Trino Aguilar led off the frame with a walk. Two batters later Cesar Aranguren drove in Aguilar with an RBI single tieing up the score at two.

The Pelicans then pieced together two more runs over the fourth and fifth innings. Marcos Rodriguez crossed the dish in the fourth off of a ground ball double play. Marcos Rodriguez then created some production of his own belting in Chaz Lytle in the fifth. The Pelicans had a 4-2 lead.

The Diablos knotted the score up at 4 in the bottom of the fifth. Evan Conley and Jordan Belcher singled back to back to start things up. Albenis Machado moved the pair over with a sacrifice bunt. Conley then scored off of a ground out and Jorge Alvarez smashed a single up the middle plating Belcher and tieing up the game.

The Pelicans scored the winning run in the top of the eighth inning off of Garvis Romero. Trino Aguilar had a lead off single and was moved over to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Aguilar then stole third base putting him into a position to score. Cesar Aranguren proved the hero for the Pelicans with a double down the right field line plating the go-ahead run.

The Diablos had a chance in the bottom of the eighth inning. With runners on the corners and two outs the Diablos sent pinch hitter Matt Kent to the plate. The Pelicans countered Kent with reliever Logan Williamson who struck out Kent to end the inning.

The Diablos had one more opportunity in the ninth. The first batter Evan Conley bunted to the new pitcher Hunter Davis who could not handle the ball, which allowed Conley to reach on the error. Joel Izqueirdo came into pinch run and Jordan Belcher sacrificed him over to second base. Albenis Machado then came up to the plate with a chance to tie the game for El Paso. Machado stroked a single over the second baseman's head into shallow right, Izquierdo raced to the plate but was thrown out at the plate by an accurate throw from right fielder Nathan Warrick. The Pelicans summoned Chris Thompson for the final batter and he induced Kory Drew into a fly out to dead center field ending the game.

Todd Androsko picks up the victory (2-2) he threw seven innings allowing four runs on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Robbie Wachman gets no decision as he lasted seven innings surrendering three earned runs on nine hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Garvis Romero gets his first loss of the year as he pitched two innings yielding one run off of three hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Chris Thompson picks up his third save for the Pelicans as he retired one batter in the last of the ninth.

The Diablos will square off with Pensacola in game two of the series at 7:05 pm on Friday night from Cohen Stadium. Andy Torres will throw against Scott Vander Meer in the affair. The game will be broadcast live at www.diablos.com with Jon Barr on the call.
