
Pelicans Take Suspended Game, Drop Seven-Inning Game on Friday Night

With rain moving the rest of Thursday's game into Friday, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans held onto their lead for a 10-6 win over the Columbia Fireflies. The Fireflies were victorious in the seven-inning game following 5-3. With the split, the Pelicans stand at 54-25 with a 7-6 second-half record. Columbia sits at 28-51 and 10-3 in the second half.
Game One: Myrtle Beach collected 13 hits on the way to a 10-6 win over Columbia. The bottom three hitters in the order all homered with Jacob Wetzel (2-3, HR, RBI, BB), Felix Stevens (1-4, HR, 2 RBI), and Ethan Hearn (1-2, HR, RBI, BB) all going yard in the victory. Kevin Made (3-5, 2B, 2 RBI) led the team in hits with three.
Johzan Oquendo (2-0) threw the final three innings with three earned runs off four hits to earn the win. Starter Luke Little threw the first three scoreless innings on Friday with just one hit allowed and two strikeouts.
Columbia received a pair of home runs from Guillermo Quintana (1-4, HR, RBI) and Dayton Dooney (1-4, HR, 3 RBI) who hit a three-run shot in the ninth. Josue Rivera led the Fireflies in hits with a pair of singles.
Thursday's starter Shane Panzini (0-2) took the loss with just under five innings pitched and four runs, two earned sacrificed off six hits and three walks, he also struck out six in the outing. Heribert Garcia allowed six earned runs over the final three innings off seven knocks.
The Pelicans took a lead just two batters into the ballgame as Josue Huma doubled and Made brought him in on a single to left field.
Three more runs were packed on in the top of the fifth at Wetzel took the first pitch of the inning to deep right field for his fifth of the season. With the bases loaded and two outs later in the inning, Kevin Alcantara smashed a single to right-center field that scored two and lifted the Pelicans to a 4-0 lead.
The Fireflies got two back in their half of the sixth as River Town hit a two-run double with two outs to put Columbia on the board.
Both teams scored a single run in the seventh as Hearn homered for the fifth time this season on a solo shot to right field. Quintana led off the bottom half with a solo homer to make the score 5-3 leading to the eighth.
Myrtle Beach put the finishing touches on with five runs in the top of the ninth. Stevens hit a two-run homer with nobody out to start the scoring. Huma hit an RBI double to plate Hearn on second and Made singled to score Huma. With runners on first and second, Juan Mora doubled down the left-field line to plate another run as the Pelicans went up 10-3.
Dooney hit his home run with runners on first and second in the bottom of the ninth to inch closer down 10-6.
Game Two: Columbia scored four runs in the opening frame and never looked back for a 5-3 win. Alcantara (2-4, HR, 2 RBI) hit a late two-run home run for the Pelicans in the top of the seventh. Ezequiel Pagan (1-4, RBI) accounted for the other run as the Pelicans outhit the Fireflies 8-6.
Richard Gallardo (4-6) allowed five earned runs across five innings off six hits and three walks to take the loss. Chase Watkins followed with a scoreless inning and a strikeout.
Enrique Valdez (2-3, 2B, 3 RBI) led the Fireflies' lineup with a two-run double in the first and an RBI single in the fifth. Jean Ramirez (3-3, 2 R) posted a three-hit game with all being singles.
The win went to Luinder Avila (5-6) who allowed just one earned run through five innings off six hits while striking out two. Jack Aldrich closed out the game with the final two innings and Alcantara's two-run homer sacrificed.
The damage was done in the first inning as four runs were scored for the Fireflies. With one out and the bases loaded, Valdez shot a double to left-center field to score two and keep runners on second and third. Quintana followed by reaching on a missed catch error by Stevens at first to score another run. Valdez would go to third and later score on a balk to put the Fireflies up 4-0.
Pagan would strike for the Pelicans in the third inning on a single to right-center field that scored James Triantos.
Valdez brought in the final run for the Fireflies on an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to make it 5-1.
With two outs in the top of the seventh, Triantos kept the game going with a single to left-center. Alcantara followed with his 11th home run of the season to right field on a 3-1 pitch to bring the deficit down to two. Pagan grounded out to end the game.
The series continues on Saturday night with game five starting at 6:05 p.m.
