Columbia Fireflies Game Notes July 9 vs Myrtle Beach

The Fireflies kick-off the weekend vs the Myrtle Beach Pelicans at Segra Park at 6:05 pm. RHP Ben Kudrna (0-3, 2.33 ERA) takes the bump for Columbia and Myrtle Beach counters with RHP Jose Miguel Gonzalez (6-0, 4.35 ERA).

COLUMBIA SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH PELICANS: The Fireflies split a doubleheader with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, starting with a 10-6 loss and ending with a 5-3 win at Segra Park Friday Night. Columbia is now 10-3 in the second half and continues to pace the South division, and are three games in front of the Pelicans. Game 1: The bats really exploded at the end of game one, the two squads combined to score eight in the ninth as Myrtle Beach took home the game 10-6. The Pelicans sent up nine hitters in the top of the ninth, scoring five runs. The scoring started with a Felix Stevens homer that led off the frame, and then continued as Josue Huma and Juan Mora collected RBI doubles and Kevin Made closed out the inning with an RBI single. Game 2: Columbia jumped out in a hurry on starter Richard Gallardo (L, 4-6). They scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to snatch the lead from Myrtle Beach. The frame started with a infield hustle single from Jean Ramirez before River Town and Carter Jensen drew one out walks to load the bases. Next, Enrique Valdez laced a double to right-center that put Columbia up 2-0. Next, Guillermo Quintana reached on an error to score Jensen and Valdez scored the final run on a balk from Gallardo that put the Fireflies up 4-0 prior to the end of the first.

MAKING MY WAY DOWN TOWN: Fireflies outfielder River Town is on a roll. As he walked in the first inning of game two Friday, Town reached base safely in his 23rd-consecutive game, which is the longest active streak in Class-A baseball. He is tied for the ninth-longest active streak in Minor League Baseball. Colson Montgomery has reached safely in 43 games dating back to April 24. The longest on-base streak in A-ball this season belonged to Denzel Clarke of the Stockton Ports. The outfielder reached safely in 37 games from April 14-June 11. To crack the top-10 list in 2022, Town needs to reach safely in 25-straight games. The longest franchise on-base streak belongs to Jeremy Vasquez who reached safely in 28-consecutive games from April 5-May 6, 2018.

NEW YEAR, NEW ME: The second half of the season started last Thursday, which reset each team's record to 0-0. The Fireflies finished the first half (66 games) 28 games back of Myrtle Beach, who had the best record in Minor League Baseball. After starting the second-half 9-2, the Fireflies are in first place and possess a magic number of 53 to clinch the first playoff berth in franchise history.

NO QUIT IN QUINTANA: Columbia's first baseman ended the longest hitting streak of any Fireflies player in 2022 when he went 0-3 in game two of yesterday's doubleheader. During his streak, Guillermo Quintana is 13-35 in 10 games (.371) with eight This is the fourth time that a Fireflies player has had a hitting streak of six or more games this season. Quintana has accomplished the feat twice and River Town has also done it two times. Raphael Gladu has the longest hitting streak in franchise history, a 23-game streak from May 9-June 9, 2018.

AMAZING AVILA: Righty Luinder Avila is the only qualifying pitcher for the Columbia Fireflies this season. Last week, after working six innings without allowing an earned run and punching out nine GreenJackets hitters, he earned Carolina League Pitcher of the Week honors. He continued his hot stretch yesterday, spinning five frames and allowing a single earned run. It was enough to earn his fifth win of the season as the Fireflies beat Myrtle Beach 5-3. In Avila's last three starts, dating back to June 25, he has tallied 17 innings while only allowing two earned runs (1.06 ERA). During the run, he has punched out 15 hitters while walking only a pair.
