Pensacola Pelicans News Release
Edinburg struck first and never looked back as they took a 6-0 lead by the 4th inning. With two outs in the first inning, Matt Spencer walked and would later score from a Anthony Angel single to centerfield. Edinburg added two more in the 3rd off Pelicans starting pitcher Jeff Norris. Amad German led off the inning with a double down the left field line and would move to third base on a Kip Parkrider sacrifice bunt. German would then score on a Norris wild pitch. Spencer drew his second walk of the night and would later score on a Eddie Lara single through the left side of the infield making the score 3-0. The 4th inning turned out to be the killer for Pensacola as again with two outs, Edinburg put a three spot on the board. Cedric Harris singled and ended Norris's day as he turned his ankle covering first base. Matt Perdue came in to relief Norris and gave up an RBI single to German that scored Harris. Parkrider then followed with a two run blast making the score 6-0.
Pensacola got the first run in the bottom of the 4th when newly acquired Rafael Alvarez hit his first homerun of the season over the right field wall. Mike Settle started the 6th inning on the mound for Pensacola and recorded two quick outs before walking the next three batters. That's when things got very interesting and caused plenty of Pelicans fans to bark as manager Bernie Carbo was ejected from the game after arguing balls and strikes with the home plate umpire during which Carbo managed to kick some dirt and throw his hat in disgust. The next pitch, Angel drove a deep shot to left field and seemed to go over the fence but left fielder Nestor Smith had different plans as he reached over the fence to rob the grand slam.
In the bottom of the 6th Pensacola added one more run when Larry Bethea doubled in Carlos Mendoza who walked earlier, making the score 6-2.
The Pelicans pulled to within two, scoring two runs in the 8th but would not be enough as they were shut down by Edinburg's closer Steve Wilkerson earning his franchise record 21st save of the year
