August 2, 2005 - Central Baseball League (Central League) News Release

FORT WORTH 15, SAN ANGELO 6 @ San Angelo, Tex. Time: 2:47 ATT: 1,249 W: Dan Grybash (5-1) L: Joldy Watts (5-10) S: None HR: FW - Terrell Merriman (11), Tony Mota (7), John Allen (9), Jason Radwan (8), Ken Lup (1) SA - Kevin Grijak (2) It's always a good sign when you almost need two hand to count all of the home runs your team has hit in a game, and that was exactly the case for Fort Worth tonight, as five players went yard, and the team piled up 15 runs in tonight's win over San Angelo. The prodigious output of the Cats was not the product of a sustained effort, tacking on run after run in inning after inning, but was rather the result of an offensive overload, followed by (comparatively) little blips for the rest of the game. Two Cats, CF Tony Mota and C Ken Lup both finished with 2-5 hitting and four RBI in the game, but the biggest all-around star tonight was DH Jason Radwan, who never missed an opportunity to pile it on the Colts more, finishing 4-4 from the plate with three RBI and two runs scored. In spite of the lopsidedness of the game, the Colts were not without their own offensive firepower, but as the score suggests, it was limited at best. 3B J.P. Schmidt lent the Colts some credibility, hitting 3-4 with two runs scored and three RBI, but got little help from the rest of the roster as the Colts simply couldn't keep up with the torrid pace set by Fort Worth. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- EL PASO 3, JACKSON 2 Game 1 @ Jackson, Miss. Time: W: L: S: HR: EP - JAX -

----------------------------------------------------------------------- JACKSON 5, EL PASO 1 Game 2 @ Jackson, Miss. Time: ATT: W: L: S: HR: EP - JAX - The Jackson - El Paso games were late. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- SHREVEPORT 8, COASTAL BEND 5 @ Robstown, Texas. Time: 2:49 ATT: 1,081 W: Erik Wikstrom (6-5) L: J.J. Trujillo (4-9) S: Carl Makowsky (10) HR: SHR - Chad Gambill (18 CB - Stephen Morales (3) While Shreveport certainly wasn't the model of efficiency tonight, when you give yourself as many chances as the Sports did, you can afford to only take advantage of 50% of them. It took both teams a while to get started, but once they got started, the runs kept coming. Scoreless in the fourth, Shreveport quickly jumped out ahead, scoring four on a three-run DH Chad Gambill home run and an error. But Coastal Bend responded, keeping themselves in the thick of things, scoring two runs of their own on a C Stephen Morales two-run home run. From there, neither team would score until the eighth, when each added one to the tally. And the game would ultimately be decided in the ninth, as games tend to be, by a five-hit sequence that brought around three more Shreveport runs, giving them a sizeable 8-3 lead with just a half-inning to play. With those three outs to play with the Aviators made a valiant effort, scoring two runs and putting a man on base with just one out before the indomitable P Carl Makowsky took the mound for the Sports, forcing two quick, easy and harmless ground outs to end the game and pick up save number ten on the year. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- EDINBURG 6, PENSACOLA 4 @ Pensacola, Fla. Time: 3:00 ATT: 1,243 W: Julio Ruiz (7-4) L: Jeff Norris (5-5) S: Steve Wilkerson (21) HR: EDI - Kip Harkrider (2) PEN - Rafael Alvarez (1) Edinburg got to play with a lead all night, and it clearly helped, as Pensacola could do nothing more than nip at their heels for the rest of the night, falling just short of pulling off a dramatic late-game comeback as Edinburg won 6-4. The Roadrunners got a quick run in the first on a two-out RBI single, and quickly added two more to their lead. The final blow came in the fourth, as SS Kip Harkrider capped off the Roadrunners' scoring with a powerful two-run home run, putting Edinburg up by a commanding 6-0 margin. In response to this, the Pelicans were able to rally the troops, clamping down on defense and opening up their offense, cutting the lead to 6-2 with three innings remaining. But the deficit was simply too much to overcome, and in spite of a two-run rally in the eighth inning the Pelicans saw their recent win streak halted at five.
