Pelicans Bury Hillcats to Secure Series Sweep

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (20-13) earned their first series sweep of the season Thursday, downing the Lynchburg Hillcats 12-3 at TicketReturn.com Field. The Pelicans outscored the Hillcats 23-6 in a one-sided series, improving their home record to 12-4. The first place Birds are the first Carolina League team to reach the 20-win plateau.

The Pelicans received lineup-wide contributions as part of a season-high 12-run attack. Eight of nine starters recorded a hit for the Birds who have amassed 20 runs in their last two games.

Rougned Odor finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and four runs scored while Jake Skole walked three times, tallied a hit, and also scored four runs.

Right-hander Luke Jackson (4-1) started for Myrtle Beach and got the win, allowing just four hits over five scoreless frames. He added six strikeouts for the second straight start, lowering his ERA to 1.72. Righty James Hoyt (2-1) was hit with the loss, surrendering seven earned runs on six hits over 3.1 innings.

The Pelicans opened things up with seven runs in the third and fourth innings combined. Odor fueled the four-run third inning with a two-run triple. He scored on the play following an error on Hoyt. He added an RBI single as part of a three-run fourth inning.

Trever Adams was 2-for-5 including an RBI single in the fourth inning. Drew Robinson was 2-for-4 with an RBI single in the third and a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.

The Pelicans lead swelled to 10-0 before the Hillcats scored three times in the seventh inning. Matt Lipka fueled the rally with a two-run home run.

For the second straight night, Adams put the Pelicans on the board early, this time with an RBI fielder's choice in the opening frame.

Right-hander Joe Van Meter worked two innings out of the pen, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits. Nick McBride finished things off with two scoreless innings.

The series sweep for the Pelicans is the team's first since last August while the nine-run triumph is the most lopsided Pelicans win of the season.

The Pelicans begin a four-game series Friday with the Salem Red Sox. Left-hander Victor Payano (2-2, 5.34) will be opposed by Salem's left-hander Henry Owens (3-1, 2.25). First pitch is on tap for 7:05 p.m. EST.
