Wichita Thunder News Release
Wichita, KS (January 17th) - The Wichita Thunder return home for the first time in two weeks and are excited to have former Wichita State Shocker and current Minnesota Twins pitcher Mike Pelfrey dropping the ceremonial puck as the team takes on the Tulsa Oilers this Friday.
Pelfrey is considered by many as one of the greatest pitchers in Shocker history. The Wichita native was drafted in his junior season by the New York Mets, ninth overall, in the 2005 Major League Baseball draft. He recently signed with the Minnesota Twins for the upcoming season. Pelfrey was a standout pitcher at Wichita Heights High School, where he was named the 2001 Kansas Gatorade Player-of-the-Year.
Joining Pelfrey will be long-time WSU skipper Gene Stephenson. In his 36th season, Stephenson has won over 1,790 games and has won more games than any other Division I coach. The Shockers were ranked 32nd in the NCAA Division I preseason poll. His team will be in attendance as well.
Wichita went 2-4-0 on its six-game road trip that began on New Year's Eve. Leading the way over the last five games is Neil Trimm with two goals and three assists. Against the Oilers, Wichita is 3-1-0 so far this season with each game being played in Wichita. Matt Summers has recorded 10 points (3g, 7a) against Tulsa in their four previous meetings while Ben Gordon and Ryan Menei each have four points against the Thunder.
The Thunder heads to the BOK Center for the first time this season for a pair of games on Saturday and Sunday. After this weekend, Wichita has a three-game home stand starting out with the Denver Cutthroats on Saturday, January 26th.
