Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
May 21, 2009 - A three run home run in the top of the 13th inning by Jamie Pedroza gave the Great Lakes Loons a 6-3 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Thursday afternoon in front of 3,036 fans at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The Loons roughed up Kernels starter Manaurys Correa for three runs in the first inning, but the Kernels pitcher settled down and didn't allow another run over seven innings. Three Kernel relievers, Andrew Taylor, Vladimir Veras and Chris Armstrong, combined with Correa to retire 26 Great Lakes batters in a row, until a two out single by Austin Gallagher in the 12th inning broke the string.
Tyson Auer led the Kernels, going 3 for 5 with two doubles and an RBI Alexi Amarista was 2 for 5 and Roberto Lopez was 1 for 5 with an RBI as the Kernels had nine hits in the game. Jamie Pedroza finished the game 2 for 6 with 4 RBI and his HR was his sixth this season.
Great Lakes starter Nathan Eovaldi allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and struck out four over 5 innings. Blake Brannon (1-0) pitched three innings of relief for the win and Luis Garcia notched his second save.
The Kernels and Loons wrap up their three game series Friday night at 6:35 pm. It's a Z 102.9 Progressive Beer Friday where 16 oz. draft beer starts at $1 when the gates open at 5:30 pm and goes up a dollar an hour until reaching full price.
