Bees Use 16 Hits in Ten-Run Win

Burlington, IA (May 21, 2009) - The Burlington Bees put 16 hits on the board Thursday afternoon in a 12-2 victory over South Bend. The win was the second convincing victory for the Bees in two days against the Silver Hawks.

South Bend scored the first run of the day in the top of the first inning. The Bees then answered back with a run in the bottom of the first when David Wood singled to score Eric Hosmer from third. South Bend scored another run in the top of the second and led 2-1 until the bottom of the third when the Bees scored four runs. In the inning, the Bees sent all nine batters to the plate. Wood struck again as he had the biggest hit, which was a two-run double to score both Hosmer and Nick Francis.

The game stayed 5-2 until the seventh inning when the Bees put up another five runs. In the inning, the Bees sent ten batters to the plate. Both Francis and Jose Bonilla had two-run doubles in the inning. The Bees finished their scoring with two runs in the eighth. Wilson Tucker led the inning off with his second homerun of the season and Bonilla had a RBI single to score Hosmer.

Sam Runion got the start and the win to move to 2-3 on the season. In six innings, he allowed two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and one walks. Both runs he allowed came via solo homeruns. Derrick Saito picked up his second hold pitching two scoreless innings. James Thompson pitched a no-hit ninth inning to finish out the game.

The Bees had 16 hits in the game. The Bees got great production from the middle of the lineup with each of the 3-4-5 hitters having three hits. Wood led the way going 3-5 with one run and three RBI. Nick Francis had three hits, two runs and two RBI, Hosmer had three hits, four runs and one RBI and Bonilla had two hits and three RBI.

The Bees conclude the series against South Bend Friday evening at Community Field. Manauris Baez is the scheduled starter. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30.
