Pedroza Hits Two Home Runs

The Calgary Vipers avoided a sweep from the Edmonton Capitals with a 10-7 victory before 2120 fans at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The Vipers took a big lead early with six runs in the third inning and hung on late for the three-run victory. Sergio Pedroza had a monster game at the plate for the Snakes with two home runs and three runs batted in. Pedroza now leads the Golden Baseball League in long balls with 20 on the season. With the victory Calgary improves to 22-12 in the second half and 48-25 overall for the top mark in the GBL.

Mac Suzuki (12) recorded the save in striking out the side in the ninth inning while Pete Sikaras was solid once again out of the bullpen throwing a scoreless eighth inning with one strikeout. Joe Sergent (7-3) picked up the victory throwing five and two-third innings and allowing four earned runs. Jose Lima (6-7) took the loss in giving up ten runs in his six innings of work.

At the plate Nelson Castro went three-for-five to raise his league best batting average to .403.

Calgary opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Fehlandt Lentini and Castro singled to put runners at the corners and Kit Pellow drove in a run with a fielder's choice for a 1-0 advantage.

Edmonton tied the game at 1-1 in the next half inning as Jose Morban doubled, advanced to third base on a Chad Ehrnsberger groundout, and scored on a Joe Jiannetti sacrifice fly.

The Vipers quickly retook the lead in the bottom of the frame at 2-1 as Colin Moro singled, advanced to second on a passed ball, and scored on a Rick Guarno run batted in single.

In the top of the third the Snakes turned a spectacular double-play to end the inning as Jorge Mejia flipped the ball out of his glove backhanded to Castro who barehanded the ball, completed a 360, and threw to first base.

Calgary took a big lead in the bottom of the third with six runs for a 8-1 advantage as Castro started the rally with a single and Pedroza clubbed his league tying 19th home run. Kit Pellow and Wilver Perez followed by singling, Moro reached on an error to allow Pellow to score, Drew Miller doubled in a tally, Guarno plated another with a single, and Jorge Mejia hit a sacrifice fly to cap off the inning.

The Capitals got a pair of runs back in the top of the fourth frame as Morban walked, Ehrnsberger singled, and after an error, Matt Ceriani double in two unearned runs for a 8-3 game.

A run was scored by the Vipers in the bottom of the inning as with two outs Perez walked, Moro singled, Miller walked to load the bases, and Perez quickly scored on a wild pitch for a 9-3 lead.

Edmonton got one back in the fifth when Mark Okano doubled and Joey Gomes knocked in him with a two-base hit of his own for a 9-4 score.

In the top of the sixth the Capitals got within three runs at 9-6 as Jiannetti and Ceriani singled, Okano walked to load the bases, and Darryl Brinkley plated two runs with a base hit.

Pedroza was back at it again in the home half of the sixth with his second home run of the night for a Calgary 10-6 advantage. The solo shot puts Pedroza atop the league with 20 long balls on the year.

Jiannetti responded for Edmonton in the next half inning with a solo blast of his own for a 10-7 game.

Calgary closes out the 2009 regular season in Edmonton against the Capitals with a three game-series on Friday August 28th at 2:00 PM MDT, Saturday August 29th at 7:00 PM MDT, and Sunday August 30th at 2:00 PM MDT.

Games 1 & 2 of the North Division Championship Series will also be in Edmonton on Tuesday September 1st and Wednesday September 2nd with both games at 7:00 PM MDT.

The Vipers will host Game 3 of the North Division Championship Series against the Capitals on Friday September 4th at 7:05 PM MDT. If necessary Games 4 & 5 will be held on Saturday September 5th at 4:00 PM MDT and Sunday September 6th at 3:00 PM MDT also at Foothills Stadium.
