Pearson Long Ball Caps Cats Comeback

June 8, 2013 - United League Baseball (ULB)
Fort Worth Cats News Release

On the back of a two-out three-run home run off the bat of rookie Kyle Pearson, the Fort Worth Cats rallied to defeat the San Angelo Colts on Saturday night at LaGrave Field.

Starting pitcher Jeff Sakowski struggled early, as he gave up three runs in the first two innings. After the third, he was pulled for reliever T.J. Bozeman, who gave up one run in three innings of work.

The Cats cut into the lead in the second inning when left fielder Daniel Meeley launched a solo home run to right field. The long ball was his first of the season.

With a 4-1 lead, Colts starting pitcher Brian Murphy was rolling into the eighth inning. Murphy signed a one-day contract with the Colts on Saturday, intending to retire after pitching in one last game.

Murphy sat down the first two batters in the eighth with ground ball outs before walking shortstop Kori Melo and giving up back-to-back hits to Chris Ellison and Shelby Ford. He was then relieved by Cephus Howard and Pearson lined the second pitch he saw over the left field fence to give the Cats their first lead of the game.

That home run was Pearson's first hit as a member of the Fort Worth Cats.

After the game Pearson said that, off the bat, he thought he had hit a line drive right at the left fielder, but knew he had something more when the crowd of over 3,000 rose to its feet. He said that it was exciting to have a clutch at-bat so early in his career.

Cats reliever Chad Robinson, who came on in relief of Bozeman, earned the win by giving up just one hit in 2.2 innings. Closer Boomer Potts came on with two outs in the ninth to earn his third save of the season.

The Colts and Cats will conclude this wild series with game four on Sunday at 6:05 p.m. at historic LaGrave Field.

Tickets to the series finale can be purchased by going to FWCats.com or by calling (817) 332-CATS.
