San Antonio Missions News Release
Matt Pearce hurled his second straight complete game as Springfield blanked San Antonio 4-0 Friday night in the opener of a three-game series at Wolff Stadium.
Enyel De Los Santos entered Friday's start in a bit of a funk, pitching to a 6.33 ERA in May. It was clear early on against the Cardinals that De Los Santos was intent on busting out of the slump, striking out five over the first two innings.
The right-hander put up another zero in the third, but was unable to avoid trouble in the fourth. Springfield strung together the game's first rally when Jesse Jenner followed Casey Grayson's RBI double with a run-scoring single to left. The two runs would be the only blemishes on the night for De Los Santos, who fanned seven and walked just one over a career-high eight innings.
On most nights De Los Santos (2-3) would have cruised to a victory, but not Friday, with Pearce once again dealing. The Bonita Springs, FL native went the distance for the second straight start, allowing just four hits and no walks, while fanning six. Pearce (5-2) threw 76 of his 107 pitches for strikes.
Springfield tacked on a pair of unearned runs in the ninth of lefty Kyle McGrath, who was activated from the disabled list earlier in the day.
San Antonio (27-21) resumes its three-game series with Springfield (25-21) Saturday at 7:05 PM. Lefty Jerry Keel (3-2, 2.96) will take the ball in his first start since joining the club from Class A Fort Wayne. Keel made three starts for San Antonio late last season. Springfield counters with right-hander Jack Flaherty, who is 7-1 with a 1.26 ERA through nine starts this season. Following the game there will be a special fireworks show courtesy of Mission Mitsubishi. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
Notes: Right-handers Adrian De Horta and Wilmer Torres were transferred to Extended Spring and Fort Wayne respectively as the corresponding moves for Keel and McGrath. Luis Urias finished 0-for-4 to snap his 12-game hit streak.
