Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC News Release
Last newsletter, we introduced Paul Child. As a result, Paul received a lot of email from our fans. There were a ton of great comments and questions. Here is one of them...
Dear Paul:
I'm a newcomer to soccer, and I don't understand the red card and yellow card business. Can you please explain it to me?
Signed, Confused
Dear Confused:
Thanks for the note. The referee gives a first yellow card to a player for tripping, pushing, unsportsmanlike conduct, etc. He'll give a second yellow card for consistent tripping, pushing and unsportsmanlike conduct -- which results in an automatic red card. That results in a player being ejected from the game. A deliberate or dangerous trip, challenge from behind and that sort of thing can be an automatic red card and ejection from the game (all at the referee's discretion). When this happens the team plays with one fewer player (in other words the ejected player is not replaced by a substitute).
Thanks for your questions. Keep them coming.
Regards,
Paul
