Tampa Yankees News Release
TAMPA, Fla. - An early four-run deficit and four fielding errors proved to be too much as the Tampa Yankees (8-6) fell, 8-4, to the Dunedin Blue Jays (8-6) on Wednesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Dunedin loaded the bases with nobody out in the first against Tampa starter Gabriel Encinas. Ryan McBroom drove in a run, reaching on a fielder's choice. Emilio Guerrero followed with an RBI groundout, giving the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead.
The Yankees tied the score against LHP Juliandry Higuera in the home half. Jorge Mateo walked and advanced to third on a single by Abiatal Avelino. Avelino tried to steal second and got caught up in a rundown. During the pickle, Mateo stole home, beating a play to the plate, as Avelino took second on the throw. A groundout by Billy Fleming allowed Avelino to score.
The Blue Jays took back the lead for good in the second. Derrick Loveless walked, stole second, stole third and scored on an errant throw by Tampa catcher Wes Wilson.
Encinas (0-2) allowed three runs on one hit in an inning and two-thirds. The right-hander walked six and struck out two.
RHP Eric Ruth got the final out of the second and ran into trouble in the third. D.J. Davis reached on a bunt single and stole second. One out later, Mike Reeves lined an RBI double to right-center. Loveless followed with a single and both scored on a two-out, two-run double by Jonathan Davis, giving Dunedin a 6-2 advantage.
Reeves walked, stole second, stole third and scored on a triple by Jonathan Davis in the fifth, adding another run to the Blue Jay score.
Mark Payton hit a solo home run off RHP Carlos Ramirez (1-0) in the sixth. It was Payton's second home run of the season and Tampa to within four.
Dunedin got the run back in the seventh as Loveless singled and scored on a missed-catch error in right field by Austin Aune, allowing Christian Lopes to reach third.
In the ninth, Jake Skole lined a two-out triple to the gab in left-center and scored on a single by Mateo before LHP Matt Dermody retired the side.
Payton (2-for-4, HR, RBI, R) recorded two of the six Tampa hits. Mateo (1-for-3, RBI, 2 BB) and Avelino (1-for-4, R) tallied two stolen bases apiece.
