Payano and Wood Ducks shut out Mudcats 5-0
The Mudcats saw their five game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday night
ZEBULON, N.C. - Pedro Payano pitched through seven and 1/3 scoreless innings while leading the Down East Wood Ducks to a 5-0 shutout victory against the Mudcats on Monday night at Five County Stadium. The loss snapped Carolina's winning streak at five consecutive games.
Lucas Erceg and Mitch Ghelfi had the only hits for the Mudcats (18-19) in their series opening loss to Down East (15-22). Erceg singled off Payano (1-2, 4.12) in the second and Ghelfi collected a double off him in the seventh. But, Payano struck out four, walked three and retired 15 straight between the two hits he allowed while finishing with a game score of 78.
Conor Harber started for the Mudcats and worked though five and 2/3 innings with just two runs allowed on five hits. Harber (1-3, 3.19) also walked five, struck out one and ended up taking the loss after the Mudcats failed to provide any run support.
Ledarious Clark drove in the game's first run with a two-out RBI double in the third and was 2-for-5 for the Wood Ducks. Eduard Pinto and Carlos Arroyo also had two hits and were both 2-for-4 in the game..
Down East led 2-0 after the fourth before later taking a 5-0 lead in the seventh against reliever Scott Grist and the Mudcats. Grist first entered the game in the sixth and managed to get the Mudcats out of the inning before later leaving partway through the seventh. He pitched through two-thirds of an inning and allowed three runs on five hits. Chuck Moorman had a run scoring hit off Grist in the seventh and was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Wuilder Rodriguez eventually finished the seventh and went on to pitch two and 2/3 scoreless innings for the Mudcats. He did not allowed a hit and struck out two.
Relievers Jordan Shortslef and Brady Fiegl wrapped things up for the Wood Ducks while working through the final inning and 2/3. Shortslef struck out both Corey Ray and Luis Aviles with two on in the eighth and Fiegl retired the side in order in the ninth.
Jake Gatewood was 0-for-4 in Monday's loss and snapped his hitting streak at 23 consecutive games. Gatewood's hit streak finishes tied for the longest in Carolina Mudcats team history. Bryson Myles of the 2013 Mudcats also hit safely in 23 straight games.
UP NEXT: The Mudcats and Wood Ducks will continue their four game set on Tuesday night with the first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Five County Stadium. The Mudcats will have right-hander Corbin Burnes on the mound for the Tuesday night start.
