Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
COLUMBUS, GA - The Pensacola Ice Flyers's power play was the key factor in their 4-2 victory over the Columbus Cottonmouths on Saturday night in front of the 3,237 in attendance at the Columbus Civic Center.
On their first power play, from the side of the net Adam Pawlick sent the puck through the crease that would deflect in to get the Ice Flyers on the board first at 9:12 of the opening period. Following a boarding call on Columbus' Shawn Bates, Pawlick scored his second power play goal of the night just 4:10 after his first with assists to Steve Bergin and Corey Banfield. Pensacola dominated the first with 17 shots to the Cottonmouths' 6.
Columbus picked up the tempo coming into the second. A chance to get the Cottonmouths on the board, Bates was awarded a penalty shot but was denied by Max Strang. Shortly after they managed to move within one as Chris Bailer scored at the 4:20 mark.
The Cottonmouths kept the momentum going and evened the score up with Bryce Williamson's goal at 12:30 of the second. A few minutes after, a third power play goal for Pawlick who ripped it top shelf on Andrew Loewen put Pensacola back in the lead 3-2.
The final period was very physical on both sides. Columbus had some great chances but Strang stood tall in net. With time running down, Loewen headed to the bench for the extra attacker. Brett Beebe would take advantage of the empty net and score with thirty-eight seconds remaining to seal the deal.
SOG were in favor of Pensacola 38 to 29 and were 3 for 6 on the power play.
First star of the game went to none other than Pawlick for his 3 power-play goals followed by Banfield who had 3 assists and the third star was Columbus' Williamson for his goal and assist.
With the win, the Ice Flyers now holds a record of 26-14-6 for 58 points and are now in a three-way tie for second with the Cottonmouths and Riverkings.
The Ice Flyers will be in Lafayette tomorrow afternoon to take on the Louisiana Ice Gators at 3:05 p.m.. You can watch live at Beef O Brady's in downtown Pensacola or 9 Mile Road. All away games are also available online at SPHLLive.com.
