PEORIA, Ill. - Mike Hayward blasted a one-timer from the right point, breaking a 2-2 tie with less than six minutes to go in the third period and the Mississippi RiverKings (28-18-2) edged the Peoria Rivermen (32-15-3), 3-2, Saturday night at Carver Arena.

The RiverKings held three one goal leads in the game and they got their first advantage late in the opening period. Devin Mantha deflected a Mike Grace point shot on the power play to give the RiverKings a 1-0 lead with 2:32 left in the first period for his 15th goal of the season. Grace and Randazzo got assists on the goal, the fourth straight game with a power-play goal for the RiverKings.

Peoria evened the game in the second when Ben Oskroba sent a shot from the left point. It hit several bodies in front then barely trickled over the goal line as Adam Courchaine tried to squeeze the pads. Josh Harris was credited with the goal at 5:27. After a near line brawl at 6:18 which gave the Rivermen an unsuccssful power play, the RiverKings reclaimed the lead. Leo Thomas won an offensive zone faceoff and two quick passes from Linden Bahm to Matt Whitehead back to Thomas in the slot set up his snap shot for a 2-1 lead at 9:15 of the second.

Peoria again tied the game in the third when Nick Schneider fired a point shot past Courchaine for a 2-2 game at 8:41. Less than six minutes later it was Hayward who broke the tie with his slap shot from the right point at 14:12 of the third. That would hold as the game-winning goal as the RiverKings split the two-game trip to Peoria. Courchaine made 48 saves for his 12th win of the season.

Notes: After losing his first nine decisions to start the year (0-7-2), Adam Courchaine is 12-5-0 with his win tonight... Leo Thomas extended his scoring streak to four games and Matt Whitehead extended his to five games... Mike Hayward's game-winning goal was his first of the season and the second of his career... The win moves the RiverKings back into a three-way tie for second place in the SPHL.
