Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
(Vero Beach, FL) - Ryan Patterson shattered the Florida State League record for total bases in a 19-12 win for Dunedin over the Vero Beach Dodgers Monday night at Holman Stadium. Patterson's record 17 total bases came from three home runs, two doubles and single. He drove in nine runs (1 shy of the league record) and scored five times. The Blue Jays go for a sweep of the Dodgers Tuesday night at 7:00 PM at Holman Stadium.
Patterson's night overshadowed a record-tying night from leadoff hitter Aaron Mathews. He went 6-7 (with hits in his first six at bats before the Dodgers retired him in the 9th on a ground ball double play) and all six hits were singles. That tied a league record for singles in game. He also scored after each single. No record exists for runs scored in a single game by one player.
The Blue Jays hit a total of six home runs off a Dodgers pitching staff feeling the effects of last week's 21-inning doubleheader. The only pitcher who did not allow a run for Vero Beach was infielder Jimmy Rohan, who pitched around a walk and a single in the 9th. Rohan also pitched one game last season and two games for the Columbus Catfish in 2004.
Dunedin jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Patteron's first homer was a two-run shot to center in the first inning. Juan Peralta led off the second with a solo home run and Patterson later doubled in Matthews to give the Jays their big early lead.
Vero Beach struck back in the second inning when Cole Bruce doubled in Cory Dunlap, who had walked. In the third, Jamie Hoffman led off with a single and went to third on David Nicholson's base hit. That hit extended Nicholson's hitting streak to 15 games. Blake DeWitt then singled in Hoffman and Nicholson later scored on a Dunlap double. Bruce doubled again to score Dunlap and pull the Dodgers to within 5-4.
But after the D-Jays went scoreless in the third, they would score at least one in every inning until Rohan entered in the 9th. The runs were scored in cornucopia of way. Robinzon Diaz hit his first homer of the season, a 3-run blast to right field in the fourth. Patterson delivered his second homer in the fifth inning that scored three runs. He followed it up in the sixth with a two-run moon shot over the palm trees in left field. Ron Davenport added a solo home run to center in the seventh.
The 12 runs scored by the Dodgers were a season-high. Five Vero Beach hitters had multi-hit games. DeWitt, Bruce and Ryan Russ all drove in two runs and Travis Denker scored three times. Chris Westervelt chipped in with his second home run of the season, hitting the tree trunk of a palm tree beyond the left field wall.
The crazy night went crazier in the bottom of the ninth. With one on and two outs, David Nicholson hit a pop foul to right field... and no one saw where it landed because the stadium lights went out. After a 5-minute delay to restore the lights, reliever Darryl Harang coaxed a ground out to end the game.
Tempers also flared, albeit briefly, in the 5th inning. After Albenis Castillo surrendered the three-run home run to Patterson, he got a groundout and then hit a batter. Later in the inning, he threw behind another which drew the ire of the Blue Jays dugout. Castillo ended the inning on a strikeout and made an emphatic motion with his glove. The hitter, Ryan Klosterman, took offense and the two exchanged words as the dugouts emptied. Cooler heads prevailed and after the teams were separated, no further incidents occured.
The Dodgers attempt to avoid a sweep of the four-game series Tuesday. Scott Elbert, who earned his first win in his last start and sports a 2.64 ERA, makes the start for Vero Beach.
