When an athlete gets traded, it sometimes can be a shock. Athletes may falter after a trade for one reason or another. Some players may not like their new teammates or feel that their opportunity to thrive in their new environment has decreased. Gaby Hernandez found out that he got traded when his friends called him up and told him they saw his name on "the bottom line" of ESPN. At the time he did not know where he got traded to, but when he found it was to the Marlins he said "I was so happy to find out it was them".
Growing up in Homstead, Florida, Gaby was happy to be playing for his hometown team. He was traded along with Dante Brinkley and Grant Psomas from the NY Mets organization for catcher Paul Lo Duca. Besides his friends that came with him to Florida, Hernandez believed this group of guys in the clubhouse is something special. "It's very relaxed. We just want to go out and play our game. Eventually we are going to win games, a lot of games", said Hernandez.
Hernandez was drafted out of Belen Jesuit High School in Miami. Gaby had a commitment to go to Florida International, but he decided to enter the draft and pursue his career in baseball.
During his stint in the South Atlantic League, he had a record of 6-1 with a 2.43 ERA for the Hagerstown Suns. While pitching for the Suns he threw a no-hitter. "It was a day to remember. It didn't really hit me into the off-season when people were talking to me. I'm glad it happened to me on a day that it was. It was father's day. He wasn't listening but he found and he was so proud of me".
Hernandez got the start against the Palm Beach Cardinals on opening night and allowed four runs in 5.0 innings pitched. Notoriously a slow starter, Hernandez knows his performance on the mound will gradually get better. I'm just going to get better every start and just progress. I have to be more consistent throughout the whole game. I want to start getting off to good starts early in the season so I can get even better towards the end of the season. His feelings on the rest of the rotation are real positive as well and he expects a lot from them. "These guys are going to pound the strike zone and get outs".
