Jupiter Hammerheads News Release

One of the best things about the having a minor league club in driving distance of the parent company is the increased chance of having a major league rehab assignment at the minor league facility. When a major league player goes on rehab, fans of the local minor league teams get excited about the prospect of having a professional baseball player coming to their stadium. For some of these players, the minor league stadiums and fans are the ones where the player had the most development and became who they are today. Jeremy Hermida, a Jupiter Hammerhead in 2004, excelled in the minor leagues and is poised and ready to continue that trend for the Marlins.

Hermida made a one game rehab stint in Jupiter on Monday night against the Daytona Cubs. Hermida came out of the game in the 4th inning after going 1 for 2 with a single to left field. The Hammerheads may have lost 10-4, but the fans of Jupiter got to see a player they used to cheer on, making an appearance back to the ballpark where his career was just taking off. In 2004 with the Hammerheads, Hermida appeared in 94 games and batted .297 with 10 home runs with 50 RBI.

In his first major league at-bat on August 31st against the St. Louis Cardinals, Hermida immediately made history. He hit a grand slam in a pinch-hitting role against Al Reyes. For those that don't remember, Bill Duggleby hit a grand slam in his first plate appearance on April 21, 1898 for the Philadelphia Phillies.

Jeremy is listed as the 4th best prospect in all of major league baseball. He led the South Atlantic League in walks last year playing for the Carolina Mudcats with 111. Also in 2005, he was third in the Marlins organization with a .518 slugging percentage and second with a .457 on-base percentage.

Jeremy's advice to the minor league players is to hit a lot of line drives. "It's the best way to get on base, especially at a big, windy stadium like Roger Dean".

During the 2006 season in Florida, Hermida expects to learn and grow throughout the season. Even with a lot of rookies on the team, Hermida said that six-year veteran Wes Helms is the guy the players go to in the clubhouse for anything we need. Jeremy's mentality has changed as he has progressed through the ranks by staying more level headed and taking everything in stride. Hermida claims the year he developed the most was right here at Roger Dean Stadium.

His favorite minor league moment that he remembers occurred in the Gulf Coast league in 2002 when the Marlins were playing the Braves up in Orlando, Florida. His single to left center field was his first major league hit and he hasn't stopped hitting since. Except in his next at-bat where he struck out, according to Hermida.
