Bridgeport, Conn. - The Bridgeport Bluefish (43-20, 79-54) suffered a defeat to the Somerset Patriots (36-27, 72-61) by a score of 8-1 on Saturday night at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
Esteban Yan (3-1) was not helped by his defense in his six innings of work. The righthander gave up seven runs, but only two were earned on three errors. Yan allowed nine hits and a walk in his service. Paul Oseguera pitched for the first time since August 17 and delivered three innings out of the bullpen.
Joel Kirsten (1-0) was strong in his first start with the Patriots in 2010. The southpaw tossed seven innings of shutout baseball while allowing four hits and striking out four.
The Patriots scored three runs in the first two innings before Somerset opened up the game with a grand slam in the sixth from Jeff Nettles. Somerset added one more in the seventh.
Bridgeport broke the shutout in the ninth inning by plating one; however, the Bluefish could not get any closer.
Steve Moss extended his on-base streak to 38 consecutive games. The outfielder picked up a single in the seventh.
