Newark Bears News Release

Newark, NJ - Brian "Doc" Holliday scattered two hits over six-plus innings for his first victory and Brian Barton had four hits, including a solo homer, two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Newark Bears to a 4-3 victory over the Camden Riversharks Saturday night at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium.

The win gave the Bears their second straight win and secured a series win in their final home series of the 2010 season. The Bears drew first blood in the bottom of the first inning, scoring twice to take a 2-0 lead. Leadoff hitter Tim Raines, Jr. played the role of catalyst once again by drawing a walk, stealing second, moving to third on a wild pitch and scoring on a single by Barton, the first of his hits. Barton came around to score on a single by Manny Mejia for the second run of the first inning.

Camden tied the game at 2 scoring twice in the top of the third. With one out, Juan Francia walked, stole second and came around to score on an error. Chris Walker's RBI single tied the game. The Bears bounced back on top with two runs in the third inning. Barton snapped the 2-2 tie with a long homer to straight away centerfield, his second homer in as many nights and his 18th of the season, 15th with Newark. Carl Everett walked, Eric Munson singled and after two were out, Everett came home to score on a wild pitch, giving the Bears a 4-2 advantage. The Riversharks sliced the lead to 4-3 in the top of the fourth, when Teuris Olivares walked and with two out, came around to score on Estee Harris' RBI double to left.

Holliday limited the damage there, allowing just two hits in his six and one-third innings of work and just one earned run to earn his first victory for the Bears. It was Holliday's eighth appearance and third start. Will Cunnane was brilliant in relief for the Bears, pitching the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three for his first save with the Bears. Michael Madsen, who pitched the first four innings, surrendered all four runs and fell to 2-3 overall, even though he struck out 10 in the outing.
