Pats Fall to Prince Albert 9-4

January 9, 2013 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Regina Pats News Release

First Period

It was a blistering pace to start off the Pats and Raiders sixth meeting of the campaign. The Pats found themselves down a man early in the contest, but would open the scoring. Dyson Stevenson took the puck on a shorthanded breakaway and beat Luke Siemens to give Regina the early lead. Just after the same penalty expired, the Pats top line would strike as Colton Jobke put a shot off the pads of Siemens that careened straight to the stick of Lane Scheidl who pulled it to his backhand before putting the Pats up by two. Prince Albert would reply a couple minutes later as Davis Vandane stepped over the blue-line and snapped a wrister past a surprised Matt Hewitt. Just over a minute later the Blue and White restored the two goal lead as on a 3-on-2 rush Morgan Klimchuk fed the puck to Chandler Stephenson who ended Siemens' night with a nifty backhand move. Andy Desautels came into the game and it seemed to spark the Raiders. Granted two powerplays late in the period, the Raiders struck both times with Dakota Conroy and Mike Winther tallying for Prince Albert to tie the game 3-3 before the end of the first. The Raiders outshot the Pats 17-10 in the period.

Second Period

The goals kept coming in the second period as the Raiders kept the pressure up on the Pats. After a puck bounced past Griffin Mumby at the Raiders blue-line, Winther broke in, only to be robbed by Matt Hewitt. Mark McNeil followed up the play, though, and gave the Raiders their first lead of the game. Prince Albert added to their lead two minutes later when Josh Morrissey found the back of the net through a screen to make the score 5-3. Regina cut into the lead before the end of the frame when Klimchuk found open space on the rush and beat Desautels with a high wrist shot. With the Blue and White on the powerplay late in the frame, Desautels would come up big for the Raiders as he took a sure goal away from Kyle Burroughs with a brilliant glove save to send the Raiders to the third with a 5-4 lead. Prince Albert continued to pepper Hewitt, leading the shot count 30-18 after forty minutes.

Third Period

The Pats only trailed by one heading into the final frame, but the Raiders would leave no doubt as to the result in the third. Prince Albert pumped in four more goals in the third. Anthony Bardaro opened up the scoring after Matt Hewitt made two sensational stops. With the Pats on the powerplay Carson Perreaux won a race to the puck in the Pats zone and tipped it past Hewitt. Shane Danyluk and Leon Draisaitl tacked on the final two Raider goals to seal the 9-4 victory and snap the Pats' five game win streak.
