Patriots Pound Pride to Take Game One of Championship Series

Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots defeated the Nashua Pride 8-2 in front of 4,768 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Wednesday evening to take Game One of the 2003 Atlantic League Championship Series.

Somerset struck first with three runs in the third inning. Center fielder Edgard Clemente doubled, went to second on right fielder Ryan Radmanovich's walk and advanced to third on first baseman Luis Lopez's single. Clemente scored on a sacrifice fly by catcher Robinson Cancel. and Radmanovich crossed home on an error. Lopez scored on designated hitter Michael Warner's sacrifice fly to make the score 3-0.

The Pride came back to make the score 3-1 in the fourth inning. Left fielder Joe Kilburg reached on a walk and scored on third baseman Chop Pough's double.

The Patriots added a run in the fourth inning on Clemente's solo home run to left field (2), and another run in the sixth inning for a 5-1 lead. Cancel got to first base on a walk, went to third on third baseman Jeff Nettles' double to left-center field and scored on a fielder's choice by left fielder Norm Hutchins

Nashua cut the lead to 5-2 in the seventh inning on Pough's solo home run to left field (1).

Somerset took an 8-2 advantage in the bottom of the seventh inning. Clemente singled, advanced on Radmanovich's base hit, and scored on a fielder's choice by Lopez. Cancel then drove in Radmanovich and Lopez with a two-run double.

Patriots starter Steve Falteisek (1-0) took the win, allowing two runs on six hits in 6.2 innings pitched. Pride starter Brian Smith (0-1) received the loss, giving up five runs - four earned - on nine hits in 5.1 innings pitched.
