Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, N.J., June 6-The Newark Bears pounded out 15 hits en-route to a 10-9 victory over the Somerset Patriots Friday evening at Riverfront Stadium. With the win, the Bears took two-of-three from the Patriots in this series.

Bears shortstop Eddy Martinez hit a grand slam home run off of losing pitcher Lesli Brea (0-1) in the 6th inning to put Newark ahead to stay, 10-7. The home run was Martinez' second of the season and was the Bears second grand slam this week. Al Benjamin hit a slam against Nashua on Sunday.

In a game that saw eight lead changes, eight different pitchers used and 26 hits combined by the two teams, every batter in the Bears lineup had at least one base hit. Danny Clyburn was 2-5 with 2 RBI; Pete Maestrales was 2-2 with 3 walks and 3 runs scored; Rickey Henderson went 2-4 with a walk and stolen base; and Francisco Lebron was 2-5 with a home run, his 5th, and an RBI, extending his hitting streak to seven consecutive games.

Newark reliever Manny Barrios pitched the final three innings to earn his 4th save of the season. After a walk, an error and a double steal in the 9th inning, Barrios induced a game-ending ground out by Eric Martins with the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position.

Juan Rodriguez (1-0), signed earlier in the day by Newark, picked up the win in his Bears debut. He allowed one run in one inning of work.

Somerset was led by Melvin Nieves, who was 1-4 with his 6th home run and 4 RBI, Alex Hernandez, who was 2-3 with 2 walks and 2 RBI and Martins, who went 2-5 with 3 runs scored.

Newark opens a three-game series at home Saturday against the Long Island Ducks beginning at 6:05 PM. Al Hawkins (1-2) will pitch for the Bears.
