NEWARK, NJ, June 6-The Newark Bears announced today the signing of left-handed pitcher Juan Rodriguez to a contract. Rodriguez will be in uniform this evening when the Bears host the Somerset Patriots at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium at 7:05 PM.
The 28 year-old Rodriguez has spent the majority of his career as an outfielder/first baseman, though he has appeared in 15 games as pitcher, as well. Rodriguez has now turned his attention to being a full-time pitcher.
Last season with the Nashua Pride in the Atlantic League Rodriguez made six relief appearances and posted a 2.84 ERA with no won-lost record. He also appeared in 92 games as a position player and batted .258 with 2 home runs, 14 doubles and 23 RBI.
Rodriguez, who is ambidextrous and can pitch both right-handed as well as left-handed, spent seven seasons in the Anaheim Angels organization before playing with Lehigh Valley and Nashua in the Atlantic League in 2001.
The Bears are in the midst of an eleven-game homestand, which runs through June 15th. There will be a post-game fireworks show on Saturday, June 7th, and the first 2,000 fans through the gates on Sunday, June 8th, will receive a toothbrush, courtesy of The Smile Center.
