
Patriots Gain Split with 3-2 Win over Bears in Nightcap

NEWARK, N.J., June 5-The Somerset Patriots scored 3 runs in the fifth inning and defeated the Newark Bears, 3-2, in the nightcap of today's doubleheader at Riverfront Stadium. The Bears won the first game, 9-4.
In the fateful fifth inning, shortstop Eric Martins tied the game, 1-1, with a sacrifice fly off of Newark starter and loser Tim Keinath (1-2). Bears reliever Alberto Castillo then came on and allowed Emiliano Escandon's RBI double to left field to make the score, 2-1. Alex Hernandez delivered an RBI single to make the score, 3-1.
Keinath pitched 4.2 innings, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits. He struck out one batter. Castillo pitched only .1 inning and allowed one run on 2 hits. Damon Ponce de Leon finished up with two perfect innings in relief for the Bears.
Somerset starter Steve Falteisek (1-0) earned the victory going 6 innings and allowing 2 runs, neither of which was earned, on four hits. Falteisek, the former major league right-hander struck out five batters and walked one. Scott Aldred earned his 4th save, striking out two batters in the 7th inning.
Newark scored in the 4th inning when Michael Coleman, with Jack Santora on third base, stole second. Somerset's catcher Tom McGee's errant throw allowed Santora to score the game's first run. Santora also scored in the 6th inning on Falteisek's wild pitch.
In the opener of the twin bill, Newark pounded out 12 hits in a 9-4 win. Both Danny Clyburn (his 7th and 8th) and Wil Quintana (his 5th and 6th) hit two home runs in the victory. Tom Stepka (2-2) earned the win with 6 innings of three-run, seven-hit pitching.
The Bears and Patriots will play the rubber game of this series Friday night beginning at 7:05 PM.
