Long Ball Helps Lead Bears to Win in Opener over Somerset

NEWARK, N.J., June 5-The Newark Bears hit four home runs, two each by outfielders Danny Clyburn and Wil Quintana, as Newark defeated the Somerset Patriots, 9-4, in the first game of tonight's doubleheader at Riverfront Stadium.

Clyburn, who had not played in five days because of a strained oblique muscle, hit his league-high 7th and 8th home runs. The Bears left fielder finished the day 3-3 with the two home runs, 3 RBI and 3 runs scored.

Quintana hit a three-run home run in the first inning to give the Bears a 3-0 lead. He added a solo shot in the Bears five-run 4th inning in which Clyburn and Quintana hit back-to-back home runs. The two home run game was Quintana's second such game this season. Quintana, who was 2-2 with the two homers, 2 runs scored, a walk and 4 RBI, now has 6 home runs on the season.

Michael Coleman, who was added to the Bears roster on Wednesday, made his Newark debut and was 1-4 with a two-run single in the 4th inning.

Right-hander Tom Stepka (2-2) picked up the win for Newark, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits over 6 innings. He struck out 4 batters and walked three, while also allowing solo home runs to Matt Dryer (his third) and Michael Warner (his 1st).

Scott Navarro (1-2) started and took the loss for Somerset. He allowed 7 runs on 8 hits over 3.2 innings. Reliever Kirk Griffin allowed the back-to-back home runs to Clyburn and Quintana in the fourth inning.
