Patriots complete sweep of Barnstormers with 5-4 win

Bridgewater, NJ- The Somerset Patriots defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers 5-4 at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Sunday evening to sweep the three game series.

The Patriots broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the ninth inning. Second baseman George Sandel walked and would advance to third on an error. Center fielder Pat Boran followed with the game-winning sacrifice fly to plate Sandel for the 5-4 win.

The Patriots took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Right fielder Larry Barnes and center fielder Edgard Clemente each drew walks and scored on a two-run triple by left fielder Jim Burt.

The Barnstormers cut the lead in half with a run in the top of the fourth inning on a solo home run by right fielder Eric Crozier (6).

The Patriots added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with two runs. Sandel singled and catcher Jim Buckley reached on a fielder's choice. Shortstop Nick Ortiz drove in Sandel with a single to left field, and Buckley crossed home plate on a fielding error by Lancaster left fielder Chris Van Rossum.

Lancaster tied up the game 4-4 in the top of sixth inning. Crozier singled, center fielder Jutt Hileman walked, and both runners came home on catcher Manny Santana's three-run home run (9) to right field.

Patriots reliever Robert Marquez (1-0) picked up the win with a scoreless inning and two strikeouts. Barnstormers reliever Charlie Weatherby (3-3) suffered the loss, allowing an unearned run in one inning pitched.

The 2006 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Tuesday, September 5th with a 7:05 pm game against the Road Warriors. The game includes Modell's Baseball Bingo and Rotary Appreciation Night.
