Somerset Patriots News Release
Bridgewater, NJ- The Somerset Patriots won both games of Sunday's double header at TD Bank Ballpark to complete the Opening Weekend sweep of the Road Warriors.
First Game:
The Patriots took the first game 1-0 on a walk off fielder's choice and error during Scott Kelly's at bat in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Somerset's bats were held in check, remaining hitless until Julio Borbon's double in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Aaron Dudley drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the seventh inning and was replaced at first base by Mike Fransoso. After Alfredo Rodriguez singled to move the runner to third, Kelly drove in the winning run for the second straight game.
"I just want to put the ball in play in that situation. You just want to do anything you can to help the team win," said Kelly. "It could have been anybody in this clubhouse. The opportunity was there for me today, but I'm pretty sure any one of us would have come through."
Logan Kensing (1-0) picked up the win with a scoreless inning pitched. Jailen Peguero (1-0) took the loss, allowing a run on a hit in 0.1 innings pitched.
Second Game:
The Patriots shut out the Road Warriors in game two of the double header 7-0.
Somerset took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Kyle Roller.
The Patriots extended the lead with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Justin Trapp plated two runs with an RBI single and later scored on an RBI base hit by Roller. Dudley drove in Roller with a double to make the score 5-0.
Trapp struck again for his third and fourth RBI on base hits in the bottom of the fourth and sixth innings for the 7-0 final. He finished the game 3-for-4 with a run scored and four RBI.
"I was just looking for good pitches to hit to put some good swings on the ball and luckily they fell for me today," said Trapp. "Anything I can do to help our team win is a plus. I'm going to fight for these boys. That's just how it is."
Dustin Molleken (1-0) picked up the win with a scoreless inning pitched and three strikeouts. David Perez (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs on six hits in three innings pitched.
The 2018 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford continues at TD Bank Ballpark with a 6:35 pm game against the Long Island Ducks on Tuesday, May 1st. The game features Most Improved Students Night. For tickets, visit www.somersetpatriots.com.
