Lancaster Stormers News Release
Somerset struck for eight runs over the final three innings on Sunday evening to take an 11-6 victory from the Lancaster Barnstormers to complete a sweep of the three-game series.
The Patriots hold a one-game lead over York in the Freedom Division after winning 10 of their last 12. Lancaster is now two back.
The Barnstormers grabbed a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth, their third lead of the game. Jonathon Ellis walked Aaron Herr to start the inning then survived a deep fly to center by Reggie Taylor that was run down by Wayne Lydon. Ryan Mulhern yanked a fly ball out of the yard down the left field line to put the Barnstormers ahead, 5-3. Michael Woods doubled off the fence in right against reliever Carlos Hines, and Josh Johnson brought him home with a single up the middle for a 6-3 lead.
Tim McNab, who had gotten Rick Bauer out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the top of the sixth by getting Lydon to ground into a double play, walked Joe Burke to start the second. Jeff Nettles lined out to right for the first out. With the count at 2-2 on Josh Pressley, the Somerset DH thought he had gotten a time out from plate umpire Bret Bruington and stepped out of the box. McNab fired over the plate for the third strike, and Pressley argued, prompting to his ejection. Meanwhile, Burke snuck ahead to second on the play.
It only served to fire up the Patriots. Matt Hagen singled home Burke with a liner into right center and took second on the throw to the plate. Noah Hall followed with an RBI single to left to cut the lead to 6-5.
Charlie Weatherby (1-5) took over in the eighth inning. Jason Belcher punched a single into left field to ignite the winning rally. Iggy Suarez followed with a bunt up the first base line. Both Weatherby and Mulhern went for the ball, and Lloyd Turner was late getting over to cover first as Suarez reached with a single. Wayne Lydon also beat out a bunt to load the bases.
Weatherby was able to fan Burke on a high, inside fastball for the first out, but Nettles followed with a two-run single to left. Michael Hernandez, who took over the DH role for Pressley, whacked a three-run homer onto the picnic tents for a 10-6 lead.
Andrew Dobies (2-1) faced one batter, retiring Taylor on a fly ball to center, to record the win.
The Barnstormers head to Southern Maryland to open a four-game series Monday night at 7:05. Wayne Franklin (0-2) will make the start for the Barnstormers against Dan Reichert (14-7).
NOTES: Mulhern had his fourth straight two-hit game...Turner also has had four straight multi-hit contests...Adam Witter homered in the third, his seven since coming off the DL in late July...Mulhern became the seventh Barnstormer to reach double figures in home runs this season...Lancaster lost the season series to Somerset, 12-8.
